What is a Notice of Intent to Lien?
A Notice of Intent to Lien (also called a "Threat to Lien" or "Intent Letter") is a formal letter warning that you will file a mechanic's lien if payment isn't received by a specified date.
While not legally required in most states, this notice is an extremely effective collection tool. Many payment disputes are resolved at this stage without the need to actually file a lien.
Note: In some states (like Colorado and Wyoming), a Notice of Intent to Lien IS legally required before filing an actual lien.
